Boiler Making A Banging Noise? What Kettling Actually Means
The technical term for that banging, gurgling sound, and why it's a system problem more often than a boiler one.
It's called kettling for a reason
The banging, popping sound some boilers make is properly called kettling, and the name's accurate: it's the same noise a kettle makes as limescale builds up on its element. Inside a boiler, black sludge (magnetite, a byproduct of the central heating pipework slowly corroding from the inside) settles on the heat exchanger and restricts water flow across it.
That restricted flow means the water trapped against the heat exchanger boils briefly before it can circulate away, and the popping sound is literally tiny pockets of steam collapsing. It's a genuinely mechanical explanation, not a mysterious fault.
Why it's usually a system problem, not a boiler problem
The sludge causing the noise didn't come from the boiler itself. It's built up over years across the whole central heating system, radiators, pipework, the lot, and settled wherever flow is narrowest, which often means right at the boiler's heat exchanger.
That's why replacing the boiler alone doesn't fix kettling if the same dirty system water goes straight back in. The new boiler starts collecting sludge from day one, and the same noise often returns within a year or two.
What actually fixes it
A power flush clears the sludge from the entire system, not just the boiler, forcing cleaning chemicals through every radiator and pipe run under pressure. Following it with a magnetic filter catches new sludge as it forms, which is what actually stops the problem coming straight back.
- A water test first, to confirm sludge is genuinely the cause before committing to a flush
- A full system power flush, not a partial one
- A magnetic filter fitted or checked afterward
- Radiators rebalanced once the flush is done
When it's not kettling
Not every noisy boiler is sludge. A whining or humming sound is more often a pump issue, and a loud bang on ignition can point to a delayed gas ignition fault, which is worth a proper diagnostic rather than assuming a flush will fix it.
